Soil Shipping (For Domestic Customers in the USA)

The following packaging and shipping requirements apply to regulated soil samples that originate in the United States and are being shipped to the lab for PLFA and PLFA + NLFA analysis only.

Soil samples must be shipped by themselves, with no other sample types. Do not send pure cultures for soil analysis.

1. Prepare 5 – 10 grams of fresh, moist soil for each sample. Samples must be free of foreign matter or debris, including plant parts, noxious weeds, and insects.

2. Samples can be sent freeze-dried or frozen. Samples should be freeze-dried within 3 weeks of field sampling or kept stored at -20°C.

3. Label each sample with your customer name, sample ID, and date.

4. Encase each sample in a ziplock plastic bag or other secure, watertight container
(e.g., 50 ml Falcon tube). All individual samples should then be contained within a second ziplock bag and shipped on dry ice (or cold packs) in a cooler.

Samples must be packed to prevent shifting in transport.

5. Download USDA-APHIS Permit #P526P-19-00253. A copy of this permit, in its entirety, must be placed inside your shipping container, as well as on the outside, in a document envelope.

Please read the permit before shipping samples.

6. Complete the sample submission form and return it to Microbial ID with your soil samples. Please retain a hard copy for your records.

7. Tape your shipping container well to prevent breakage or rupture. Label the outside of the container “Regulated Material, Contains Soil” in brightly colored ink.

8. Samples must be sent by a bonded carrier. Ship via priority delivery to:

William Stimson

Microbial ID, Inc.
